The Importance of Long-Term Strategic Planning

July 7, 2026

Why Businesses Often Focus on Short-Term Challenges

Last week we talked about evaluating your space as compared to how it would be different if it was perfect for your operational needs. Click here to review that post.

Here, we continue that theme with some thoughts on longer-term strategic planning, one of the most overlooked but valuable business activities we can engage in. That may sound obvious since most would probably agree that careful planning of any complicated activity would yield better results than a reactive, haphazard course of action.

But if that is true then why is it that so many of us approach daily business activities as a never-ending reaction to customers and market conditions as they exist in the moment? The answer lies in our brains’ automatic response to perceived and immediate danger. We “target-fix” on the most immediate threats to our safety before our brain allows us to consider the longer-term consequences of a situation.

Thus, in uncertain times like these, we instinctively tend to think short term. Many businesses are struggling to grow, and their owners are often geared toward bridging a gap to better times or putting out fires that threaten their operations’ survival. The idea of thinking strategically about five years or even one year out just doesn’t seem important when under immediate threat, even though at some level, we all know that it is.

The Value of Long-Term Strategic Planning

So, what is the value of developing a three or five-year strategic plan when we are battling higher operating costs, shrinking profit margins and confusing economic conditions today? Paradoxically, it may be the one thing that will ensure long-term survival because it makes us stop and think about how we do business, how our competitors do business and whether our actions support defined goals and objectives that increase our chance for success.

When we think strategically, creative and competitive juices start flowing again. We get back to looking at our businesses as a long-term path to success rather than an immediate struggle for survival. We go back on offense and find ourselves with new ideas, fresh energy and creative ways to make more money. Ironically, this often leads to solutions for our immediate problems.

Preparing Your Business Strategy for 2027 and Beyond

With year end approaching fast, now is the time to start business planning for 2027 and beyond and for taking a strategic look at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that impact your business. This will enable you to formulate a powerful business plan for success in 2027 as the fog of economic uncertainty lifts and will give you the best shot of emerging ahead of your competition.

Why Strategic Real Estate Planning Matters

There are many facets to successful business planning, real estate being a very significant yet often overlooked one. With real estate typically being a business’s second or third largest overhead cost after payroll, the importance of strategic real estate planning should not be given short shrift. This is particularly the case considering the current commercial real estate climate and the multitude of opportunities that exist for companies to realign their facility’s location, size and layout with their business plan on the most cost-effective terms we’ve seen in years. Also, leasing or acquiring commercial real estate is one of the longer-term commitments a business owner makes. Thus, the impact of good or poor decision making when it comes to choosing facilities is measured in years rather than days or months.

Avoiding Costly Real Estate Decisions

Unfortunately, too many business owners ignore their real estate until they are forced to address it. This, of course, is too late and usually results in rushed decision making that creates risk and unnecessary costs for a business and missed opportunities to leverage real estate facilities to support revenue growth.

It could be that the best action is no action at all, and your current location is your best option. In fact, that often turns out to be the case. But until the homework gets done, you won’t know. So, give us a call. We’re here to help.
